A meditation on grief, identity, and familial bonds by photographer Casey Joiner. Based in New Orleans, Joiner’s practice is loosely rooted in the documentary tradition and informed by her immediate surroundings. Having grown up on the deep south, she has a deep affection for places full of peculiarity, struggle, and slow things. “Surrounded By Natural Causes” is an attempt to confront the seeming absurdity of the day to day and the vacillations of memory (remembering and misremembering). The title comes from an obituary an AI bot might write:

“This project began long before I was aware of it. Going about everyday life while navigating the complexities of long term illness and eventual loss of a parent, I find myself occasionally in a dissociative dreamlike state… It’s unclear to me whether memory can be fully trusted, and I fill those gaps with imagined scenes.”
