For a while now, Google has been rumored to be working on an Android equivalent of Apple’s NameDrop. Today, this has become official as Tap to Share. It is available on Pixels from the Pixel 6 onwards, and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Flip8. Google promises to expand support for the feature to more devices “by the end of the year”.
As you’d expect from the name, this works by tapping two supported devices together. When that happens, stuff is shared – contact info, photos, videos, “and more”. It’s really that simple.
To swap contact info with someone, make sure you’re on your home screen and just bring your phones close together. An instant two-way exchange will happen, and that’s it. You can of course choose which contact information fields in your contact card will be shared. You can also choose to only receive the other person’s contact card.
To share photos or videos, open your phone’s Share Sheet (the menu that appears when you tap the Share button in any app), and then tap the two devices together. You can turn off Tap to Share at any time in Settings > Google > Quick Share > Tap to Share.
